Connected to the music streaming platform Spotify, activity is structured around customizable public or private “leagues” in which people vie for points awarded by other participants. I was leery of joining at first because I didn’t like the thought of music sharing being a competition, but I was eventually drawn in and found that I was listening to WAY more music than I had in years and discovering lots of cool new stuff! I’m really glad I joined this group of folks — several of whom are people I know from college — in sharing enthusiasms, opinions, and personal stories connected to music.

To my amazement, I recently passed a threshold of 100 songs submitted to the league. Looking at the list and my comments I added when submitting, I thought, “Hey, this is a great set of tracks! And they actually say a lot about me!” So I thought I’d put together a blog post for posterity. It’s arranged at the top level into the individual “leagues”, each of which had 10 rounds. Each round in turn had a “theme” that all of us were expected to adhere to when submitting our songs.

I’ve added a couple of emojis to indicate:

👶

songs I discovered when researching the round themes

🥇

songs that placed #1 in their rounds

Here’s a link to the full Spotify playlist for those who have an account. The rising vocal harmonies at the end are complex and hit me right in the feels.

“Spitting Off the Edge of the World” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Perfume Genius 🥇

Theme: Fresh Fruit (songs released after 2022)

An existentially angsty fuzz bomb. Loved it then, and love it now. The sounds are so distinctive — vocals, percussion, synth, and Tony Levin’s Chapman Stick all coming together into something great.

“Higher Ground” by Red Hot Chili Peppers

Theme: Elevator Music. Discuss.

You know someone had to do it…

In retrospect, I regretted this joke pick. It did not do well.

“Marquee Moon” by Television

Theme: A bit of personal history…

I had a moment listening to this song back in college – at about 8:45 when the heavy strumming stops and the guitar starts chirping happily – it was so beautiful I started crying. In retrospect, I think I might have some synesthesia related to music. This one made me think of a bird (me!) getting through heavy weather to a beautiful blue sky of freedom. It was both cinematic and very emotional, and I remember it to this day. Also, I still love the song.

“Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash

Theme: You like this?!! (A song you love that no one would believe you even like.)

Can’t say much or I’ll out myself… but safe to say I’m not a country fan normally, even if it’s Johnny Cash. But I can relate to this one!

“What’s He Building?” by Tom Waits

Theme: “The Music Pals Horror Movie” soundtrack

Is there confirmed murder? No, but “he” seems very suspect. The Ed Gein type. We know about these things…

“The Mad Stone” by Everything Everything

Theme: Roadkill (Alternative picks from a previous round.)

Alternate pick for last season’s “Fresh Fruit”. This is from Everything Everything’s latest album about people who dig big holes to make a giant mountain for other people. Capitalism metaphor? Totally. But I think the songs are musically interesting and not pretentious. They remind me a bit of XTC with some extra dystopian flavor on top.

“Medley Five (“Technicolor Pachyderms”)” by Sun Ra And The Arkestra, Harry Nilsson

Theme: Children’s Music that doesn’t make me want to die

I decided NOT to go with a TMBG song and instead submit this section of a Disney cover album. There are many big names here! Tom Waits (his tune is a bit scary!), Suzanne Vega, Sinéad O’Connor, Ringo Starr… etc! But many sections are medleys, and this one strikes me as the most coherent and awesome.

“Instrumental piece II” by Hildegard von Bingen, Sequentia, Margriet Tindemans

Theme: Great songs from way before your time

This might seem like a joke submission, since Hildegard of Bingen died over 800 years ago — WAY before my parents’ time, even! But I was actually introduced to this music by my mother, and this song was on the playlist at her memorial service in 2009. Also, Hildegard of Bingen was amazing!

“Whole Lotta Love – Live” by Prince 👶

Theme: Up-leveled covers

No singing, only shredding. Prince was an astonishingly good guitarist, and I really regret that I never saw him play live.

“Trouble” by TV On The Radio

Theme: Party Time!!! (free choice round)

Put on your Happy Helmet! Everything’s going to be OK!

League 4: Quoth the Raven…

“Praise You” by Fatboy Slim

Theme: Gnarly! (’90s music)

This song is SO late ’90s — a fun, sample-heavy dance track that has an infectious energy. The video directed by Spike Jonze is hilarious (and Grammy-winning), too.

“Pump Up The Volume – USA 12-inch Mix” by M/A/R/R/S

Theme: The Needle Drop (Songs about records, record needles, B-sides)

I have a 12″ single of this song that dates back to the ’80s. The only hit M/A/R/R/S ever had — and almost their only song! They’re still getting ~200k Spotify listeners every month. Wow. ‘Put the needle on the record!’

For the record (ha ha), this version is NOT identical to mine. There are so many different ones! And the “M/A/R/R/S needs women” line is missing from all the Spotify options. Which I’m… fine with?

“Full Moon, Empty Heart” by Belly

Theme: Luna (songs about the moon)

I almost submitted this for the ’90s round, then decided to save it for this one. Tanya Donnelly is great at writing weird but catchy songs, and this is one of my favorites from Star, which also has the minor hit “Feed the Tree” on it.

“Maggot Brain” by Funkadelic 🥇

Theme: You gotta hear this! (a song you are currently obsessed with)

An exploration of the realm of “progressive soul” recently led me to this classic album. Wow! The leading track consists almost entirely of a long guitar solo that was recorded in one take then tweaked in production by band leader George Clinton. A meditative, otherworldly creation that I could have saved for the “music for tripping” round, but I just couldn’t wait.

I realize this album may be well known to some of you… but I just discovered it. And it’s blowing my mind.

“Where Is My Mind?” by Pixies

Theme: Roadkill 4 (Alternate choices from a previous theme.)

Flashback to the ’80s round. And… RIP Albini, who produced this album.

“Couch Surfer” by Bran Van 3000

Theme: Watch that man! (songs about shady characters)

‘Can I crash at your place again? Just one more night?’ 👀

“Karangailyg Kara Hovaa (Dyngyldai)” by Yat-Kha 👶

Theme: What’s that sound?!! (songs featuring an unusual instrument)

This features both a central-Asian zither called a “yatga” as well as the throat-singing of the main guy Albert Kuvezin, who is from Tuva (currently considered part of Russia). Interesting stuff, especially when combined with the electronic elements. (I went looking for his song “Teve-haya” on Spotify for nostalgic reasons and couldn’t find it. Probably best, because it is a lot longer and has more weird production stuff.)

I learned after submitting this song that Apple included it in an ad campaign for the iPhone 15 last fall. Bizarre! And not related to my selection at all.

“Inner Flight” by Primal Scream 👶

Theme: Look at all the pretty colors!! (music for tripping)

It was hard to decide what song to pick from this album — many songs seemed appropriate — but I made a last minute change to this one because it really gets across a dreamy quality that I would like to have on a “trip”. Also, is that a “whirly tube” being swung around at various points?

“All Mixed Up” by The Cars

Theme: Perfect Album Closers

This album was a favorite of mine as a kid, and I often listened to it while going to sleep. The last song always felt perfect because it combines elements from previous songs in a minor key mysterious way and never resolves those mysteries. Instead, it rolls off to dreamland on the tail of a sax solo. Also, it’s a great song.

“When I Was Done Dying” by Dan Deacon 🥇

Theme: Party Time 4!

This oddly cheerful song about dying (or hallucinating about dying?) could have been submitted to the “tripping” round. No lyrics on Spotify, but they can be found on the web and are pretty weird and interesting. There’s an “exquisite corpse”-style video of the song on YouTube that is pretty cool, too.

League 5: More of that Funky Jive

“Time” by Pink Floyd

Theme: Music from the 1970s

I feel like I’m going for the obvious here, but there’s no orange box? Anyway… Pink Floyd were titans of this decade. Several absolute classic albums that helped define progressive rock and have something new to impart on every listen 50 years later. This record blew my mind when I was a teen, and this particular track becomes ever more relevant the more I age. “Then one day you find 10 years have got behind you”… not to mention the “closer to death” part! Oops, I mentioned it.

“The Metal” by Tenacious D 👶

Theme: They can play or sing too?!! (songs by people primarily known as actors or celebrities)

Not news to most of the people in the league, I’m sure, but… the actor Jack Black (High Fidelity, School of Rock, King Kong, etc.) is one half of the duo that is Tenacious D. He and his buddy Kyle Gass write some hilarious songs that also have some chops musically. And they do love their metal!

“Think Locally, Fuck Globally” by Gogol Bordello 👶

Theme: Steve Albini tribute round

This is probably the wackiest song on this album, performance-wise. According to Pitchfork, it has “a drum-break purportedly played on an overturned fire bucket”, which tracks from my own experience seeing the band play live. I love their unhinged energy.

“Who Is It (Carry My Joy on the Left, Carry My Pain on the Right)” by Björk 👶

Theme: A Capella songs by artists that are not a capella artists

All of the songs on this album rely on human voices, either sung or sampled. This track features mysterious lyrics from Björk (who is it? I still don’t know), sampled vocals, beat-boxing and throat singing from collaborators.

“Honest Joe” by James

Theme: Leftovers

Alternate for the ’90s round. All of the tracks on this album are improvisational, which explains the less structured sound of many of them. I dig the way this one evolves over the 4-plus minutes, with drums, guitar, distorted vocals & electronic elements all important in the mix. Fun fact: Brian Eno was producing “Laid” for the band and liked what he was hearing in these practice sessions so much that he urged them to put out a standalone album of them. There’s lots of cool stuff on it.

“Triad” by TOOL

Theme: Instrumentals

I love this album and have been meaning to submit something from it for a while. Triad = something mystical? Or just a reference to the 3/4 time signature? Dunno, but I dig it.

“Medical Love Song” by Monty Python 🥇

Theme: Music for adults that kids love

Hilarious to me as a teen, and I am sure a hit with other kids as well. This whole album is quite entertaining, though increasingly full of holes as decades have passed and more songs have been removed from it. Including “Farewell to John Denver”, the item “omitted on legal advice” at the end of this song.

I had no idea when I taped a friend’s LP back in 1985 that “Farewell to John Denver” would become a collector’s item. I just listened to it again for the first time in decades & LOLed.

“Baba O’Riley” by The Who

Theme: Perfect album openers

Can’t say I’m much of a Who fan, but this is a banging start to the album, and probably the best track on it.

“Donnie Darko” by Let’s Eat Grandma

Theme: EPICS! (songs over 10 minutes in length)

This 2010s-era band from Norwich, England describe their music as “experimental sludge pop”, but nothing seems sludgy about this track. Experimental and pop, yes. Also cool, and named after a great movie.

“Having A Party” by Lee “Scratch” Perry, Steve Marshall

Theme: Party Time 5! (free choice round)

I know party tunes are not required, but… I still want to party, reggae style.

Interlude: Solstice Pals

“Oi To The World” by No Doubt 👶

Theme: Jingle Bell Rock (rock and roll holiday music)

This is a silly one, but it’s definitely rock and Christmas-related!

“Don’t Shoot Me Santa” by The Killers, Ryan Pardey 👶

Theme: Recent Holiday Songs (2010 or later)

This song seems to depict an alternate universe where instead of getting coal in stockings, bad kids… eat lead??

“Boxing Day Blues (Revisited)” by Courtney Barnett 👶

Theme: Holiday Party (free choice round)

There’s a melancholy to this time of year that this song captures well. (Boxing Day = the day after Christmas in Australia, where Barnett lives.)

“Skating” by Vince Guaraldi Trio

Theme: Holiday Memories (a holiday song from childhood)

My family had no tradition of listening to holiday music when I was growing up, so my strongest childhood memories of it are connected to TV specials — especially “A Charlie Brown Christmas”. Jazz was even less familiar to me as a kid, so Vince Guaraldi Trio’s work on the soundtrack was absolutely distinctive. I had a hard time picking from several contenders on this album, but decided to go with this peppy number that really evokes the feel of children playing in the falling snow.

League 8: Bring Me Your Hate

“The Crane Wife 3” by The Decemberists

Theme: Leftovers 8

This would have been a good candidate for the “Perfect Album Openers” round a while back. It’s lively and pretty in a way that most of the rest of the album isn’t, which might be a plus or a minus depending on where you stand. (I also considered “The Crane Wife 1 & 2” for the epics – 10+ minutes – round.)

“Who by Fire – From ‘Bad Sisters’ ” by PJ Harvey, Tim Phillips

Theme: Offerings to the Supreme Overlord (songs the league admin will like)

I’ve been wanting to submit this one for a while. It’s from the title sequence of the black comedy “Bad Sisters”, about four Irish sisters who plot murder against the abusive (truly vile) husband of their fifth sister. I know Marcus loves PJ Harvey (covering Leonard Cohen in this instance, but still!), and I think he might like this show if he ever watched it… I’m throwing it in the ring!

“Born in Winter” by Gojira 👶🥇

Theme: In the Dead of Winter

This song is hitting the spot right now.

“Overground – Thorn EP Version” by Siouxsie and the Banshees

Theme: Grrl Power S8 (songs about or performed by strong women)

“Overground I’ll be worse than me.” This flamenco-influenced version of Siouxsie Sioux’s song about embracing one’s authentic (subterranean?) self gives me goosebumps. I had to do some looking to find it, as the version I have is on a compilation (‘Twice Upon a Time’) that is not on Spotify.

“Prophecies” by Philip Glass

Theme: An Uneasy Peace (songs that seem calm but have an underlying sense of menace)

A minimalist piece that has stuck with me since seeing the movie it featured in. The shifting tempo in the first half gives an off-kilter feel, and the latter half returns to the intro chant of ‘koyaanisqatsi’ — a Hopi word for ‘life out of balance’. Then there are the lyrics from the first half, which are pretty apocalyptic…

“Nazi Punks Fuck Off” by Napalm Death 👶🥇

Theme: Cover Songs, season 8

Why is this still so relevant? (original by Dead Kennedys)

“Wendell Gee” by R.E.M.

Theme: Mutiny Against the Supreme Overlord (songs the league admin will hate)

I’m not sure why, but I have a feeling that Marc hates R.E.M. and would especially hate a slow, folky, banjo-pickin’ number like this one. As for me, I love it. Something about Stipe’s delivery, the harmonies, and weird poetic lyrics really gets me.

“Battle Flag – Lo Fidelity Allstars Remix” by Pigeonhed, Lo Fidelity Allstars

Theme: Songs from the 1990s

I like big beats, and I cannot lie. That’s something I realized when revisiting the ’90s for this round. Several bands were contenders, but I went with Lo Fidelity Allstars because they’re less well-known in the U.S. and the rest of their album “How to Operate with a Blown Mind” is catchy electronica with a potent thread of weirdness running through it.

“Maple Leaf Rag” by Tuba Skinny 👶

Theme: True Oldies (music from before 1950; later versions allowed)

This one’s for our Canadian friends… a great New Orleans jazz version of Scott Joplin’s classic “Maple Leaf Rag”. I just love that clarinet!!

“Washing Machine Heart” by Mitski

Theme: Party Time 8

This song is kind of twisted, but I love it.

League 9: Tunes to make you whine!

“The May Queen” by Robert Plant 👶

Theme: Springtime for Music League (songs that make you think of spring)

Robert Plant has been up to some interesting stuff since the Led Zep days. I like this bluesy tribute to springtime yearning.

“Roses In Water” by Sunny Day Real Estate

Theme: What I Meant to Say (leftovers round)

A forgotten gem I dug up when preparing for the latest ’90s round.

“Les dauphins et les licornes” by Les Trois Accords 👶

Theme: English Is Boring (songs with non-English-language lyrics)

I recently discovered this band from Québec. Their lyrics are often goofy, but this song has some weird poetry to it.

“Whirring” by The Joy Formidable

Theme: Bucket List Part 1: It’s Possible! (a band you really want to see perform live)

Not only do I want to see this band live, but I almost did once! Bought tickets and everything, then they canceled the show for unclear reasons. There’s still hope, though!

“Arsenic and Old Lace” by Friezes 👶

Theme: Tea Time

I think about tea and my mind goes right to ‘old ladies poisoning people’. I ain’t right.

“Televised Mind” by Fontaines D.C. 👶

Theme: The Kids Are Alright (songs from a younger generation)

These Irish lads have got it going on. I dig their fusion of punk, poetry, and fuzzy guitars.

“Low Rider” by War

Theme: Damn this traffic jam! (music to make being stuck in traffic better)

Slow driving is actually cool, especially if the car bounces. (This song makes me chuckle because I cannot listen to it without thinking of Cheech & Chong’s “Up in Smoke”.)

“No Front Teeth” by Perfume Genius, Aldous Harding

Theme: SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! (a band/musician that you will always order new music from no matter what)

I’m not in the habit of buying music outside of streaming services these days (I know — bad!), but I always have to check out whatever Perfume Genius releases. He’s a great lyricist, an expressive singer, and has quite a way with musical soundscapes. This is one of his most recent songs from this year.

“Quiche Lorraine” by The B-52’s 👶

Theme: 🌈PRIDE🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ (Celebrate queer musicians and queer songs!)

Most of the members of The B-52s are gay or bisexual, and a funny queer sensibility is evident in many of their songs. Fred Schneider is hilarious in this one. “Quiche, come back here! Don’t leave me — I’ll go insane!”

Every time I see a tiny dog on a leash now, I think of it as Quiche Lorraine.

“Prince Johnny” by St. Vincent

Theme: Party Time 9 (free choice round)

IMO, this song is a moody masterpiece. Still kicking myself that I missed the St. Vincent show I had already bought tickets for several years ago.

League 11: NO “STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN”!!!

“Bad Indian” by Dead Pioneers 🥇

Theme: Lyrics Matter

Some indigenous spoken word / punk for y’all. The full lyrics don’t fit in the comment, but here’s one of my favorite verses:

A woman once asked me my Indian name
I said: It’s Gregg
And she was so disappointed!
“NO” she said
“It has to be Red Eagle or Two Rivers!”
“Or ‘Grey Skull’” I said
“YES! Wait, is that for real?!”
“No, no” I said, without her realizing my brief but generationally relevant He-Man joke

You can find the rest on the Dead Pioneers Bandcamp page.

“Seattle” by Public Image Ltd., Eric ‘ET’ Thorngren

Theme: Terrible Album, but this one track…

I would not call “Happy?” terrible overall, but most of it is kinda boring compared to this track, which opens the album. And I realized when listening to it again for this round that I’ve barely listened to the songs on side 2, as my tolerance for Lydon’s voice usually ends after listening to side 1. (I have a vinyl copy.)

“Clawhammer Medley” by Steve Martin 👶

Theme: One Hit Wonder – deep cut

I had some trouble with this round, but decided to go with this banjo tune arranged and performed by Steve Martin. His “one hit wonder” status (musically, at least) was established with “King Tut” in the late ’70s, but he’s an accomplished player of the banjo and has put out quite a few albums. I like the mid-tempo brightness of this one.

“Uptown – Summer of Soul Soundtrack – Live at the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival” by The Chambers Brothers

Theme: Music Pals Live Concert

The opening track on the soundtrack album released after the 2021 movie “Summer of Soul”, which resurfaced an amazing trove of recordings from the Harlem Cultural Festival in 1969 that had been lost to obscurity for decades. The Chambers Brothers are known for playing “psychedelic soul”, and you get a little bit of that with this track, but it’s mostly an energetic mover to get the party started.

“It Is Right to Give Drones and Praise” by Tau & the Drones of Praise

Theme: Why The Long Title? (song titles with at least 7 words)

This song has been in my “liked songs” on Spotify for several years. I do not know the band, but I immediately resonated with the trancey vibe and positive feel. (In this case, “drone” refers to a musical sound, not a flying machine.) Just now I learned they are Irish and German and also discovered they have a video for the song that is incredibly charming. Yes! It IS right to give praise to trees! And people in funny tree costumes!

Chopin: Scherzo No. 3 in C-Sharp Minor, Op. 39 by Frédéric Chopin, Martha Argerich 👶

Theme: Gimme the keys, you’ve heard one too many (piano/keyboard tracks)

Martha Argerich is an amazing pianist (viewed by many as one of the greatest pianists of all time) who recorded this album when she was in her mid-20s and had just won the International Chopin Piano Competition. She makes the flurries of notes in this piece seem totally effortless, and the last minute really blows your socks off.

A retrospective note: This was where I learned not to submit classical music to the league. This came in next to last, despite being amazing.

“Under Ice” by Kate Bush

Theme: A favorite track from a year of your choice.

A perfect vignette from Bush’s 1985 album, “Hounds of Love”. A sense of unease, an anguished cry, and a mysterious coda of what sounds like throat-singing performed by a non-human. It’s a mood!

“Creature with the Atom Brain” by Roky Erickson 👶

Theme: 🎃👻🦇Halloween Party Time! 🧛💀🧟

A wide swath of Roky Erickson’s musical catalog fits with this round theme, so it took me a while to pick a song. I like the B-movie dialogue and weird sound effects in this one.

“She Speeds” by Straitjacket Fits 👶

Theme: Discovery Round – “No Way Anyone Else Knows This” Edition

I absolutely love this New Zealand band’s album “Melt”, which was distributed in the US after a brief period of touring and radio play here. It’s not available on Spotify, but their earlier album “Hail” is. This song (previously released on an intro EP) showcases their odd guitar sound and elliptical lyrics to great effect. (Note: the Spotify lyrics are not accurate. These are better: https://genius.com/Straitjacket-fits-she-speeds-lyrics)

“Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am” by Fela Kuti 👶

Theme: 9:59 and Beyond…

A slow rumble of revolt against the powers that be.

League 12: let’s do a deep delve!

“Makin’ Woopie – Live” by Ray Charles 👶

Theme: Leftovers

This was a leftover from the “Gimme the keys” round, but it’s also a fit for the live concert round. I really enjoy Ray’s relaxed and slightly naughty vibe on this one.

“Young Pilgrims” by The Shins 👶

Theme: 🦃Thanksgiving 🍁

There’s a “pilgrim” reference here, but more substantially, this song gets at the dark mood that often comes as the light gets dim in late November.

“The Avant Garde” by David Byrne, Ghost Train Orchestra 👶

Theme: 🧓 Longevity 2025 (a 2025 song from an artist who’s been around for at least 25 years)

He’s still out there, being weird and interesting. This song makes me chuckle.

“Paranoimia (feat. This was a song by Art of Noise that crossed over with it somehow and also got some radio play. I bought it on vinyl back in the ’80s and still love it.

“Selva y Semilla” by El Significado de Las Flores 👶🥇

Theme: 🚆No English 🚈

In my explorations for this round, I learned that Chile has quite the rock music scene! I had a hard time picking what to submit from several great options, but decided to go with this track from a young band (they look about 20) whose energy I really like.

“Applesauce vs. Sour Cream” by The LeeVees 👶

Theme: 🎄 Holiday Party Time 🍭

In honor of my boss, who makes latkes for us at work. The feel of this is SO They Might Be Giants, though neither of the Johns are involved… the main members are from Guster and The Zambonis.

“Light, refracted” by Maya Shenfeld 👶

Theme: ❄️☃️ Winter Solstice 🏂🏔️

There’s a spooky, transcendent quality to this that gets across the sense of staring into the abyss and having the abyss blink. Perfect for the darkest day of the year! Also there’s a song called “Analemma” on this album, which refers to the figure 8 shape of the sun’s position photographed repeatedly throughout the year. The winter solstice is at the very bottom…

“Secret Police” by Fishbone 👶

Theme: Politically Charged

From a band with a long history of protest music, this one is ripped from current headlines. Secret Police = ICE. The lyrics for their most recent 2025 album aren’t on Spotify, but the words for this song are here: https://genius.com/Fishbone-secret-police-lyrics

“mangetout” by Wet Leg

Theme: Best of 2025

I like this whole album, and apart from “catch these fists” (previously submitted to the league), this is my favorite track. The lyrics are mean in an entertaining way, and I like the singing and energy, too.

Not mentioned in my original comment because I knew it would be a tell: this song is featured in Heated Rivalry, my new favorite TV show (with a great soundtrack!), so I heard it a bunch while re-watching and liked it more every time.

League 13: Things Hitherto Unseen

“EURO-COUNTRY” by CMAT

Theme: Leftovers, Season 13

I just love the melody and singing in this song. CMAT has a beautiful voice! As for the leftover theme, it’s a little column A / column B. I first considered this for “best of 2025”, but upon learning more about the singer and the context of the lyrics, I think in addition to a breakup song, it’s also a bit of a protest / social commentary about the economic devastation in Ireland after the 2007 financial collapse. There’s also some hate for Irish politician Bertie Ahern, who was responsible for economic policies that led to the crash. There’s a lot in here!

“Breathe” by The Prodigy

Theme: Fight! (Song for a fight/battle scene.)

This whole album is aggro as hell.

“Medicine for Horses” by Viagra Boys

Theme: Less than 2.59 and still good

Melancholy + acid wit = magic.

“DtMF” by Bad Bunny

Theme: Artists who have told Trump to stop using their music.

Maybe an obvious pick after a triumphant Super Bowl performance that infuriated Drumpf, but I really like the relaxed vibe of this song that also has a poignant aspect of lost connections and people we wish were still in our lives. (“DtMF” is an abbreviation of the album title, “Debí Tirar Más Fotos”, which means “I should have taken more photos”.) The lyrics are translated into English here for anyone who wants or needs them: https://genius.com/Genius-english-translations-bad-bunny-dtmf-english-translation-lyrics

“Purple Rain” by Prince

Theme: POWER BALLADS!!

I don’t like to repeat myself, and I have submitted Prince once before, but I cannot pass up this chance to submit one of his most sublime songs.

“If I Had a Heart” by Fever Ray 🥇

Theme: GOOSEBUMPS!!

Goosebumps, shivers, heebie-jeebies… this song provides. The video is pretty creepy, too.

“Copperhead Road” by Steve Earle 👶

Theme: Proof country music can be good

Not being a fan of country at all, I had to do some lateral thinking to land on this one. “Who was that musician who had a recurring role on The Wire? He seemed cool.” And that led me to this track, which Rolling Stone characterized as “power twang”. Appropriately enough for outlaw music, they had to change the name of the Tennessee road that it’s named after because people kept stealing the signs after the song came out.

“Macbeth” by Sonic Youth 👶

Theme: Give the singer a break! (Instrumental tracks on albums that aren’t instrumental albums.)

I dig this clanking, droning, fuzzy weirdness. It’s true that this isn’t the only instrumental track on this album, but there are quite a few with vocals, so I am going with it.

“(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” by Blue Öyster Cult 🥇

Theme: It’s overplayed because it’s awesome!

A moody, atmospheric classic that was cited by Stephen King as an inspiration for The Stand. I just love the guitar sound, and the amount of cowbell is just right (i.e. barely noticeable until pointed out). 😉

“Virginia Plain” by Roxy Music

Theme: Party Time (free choice round)

I was reminded of this 1972 classic when considering what to submit last round. It is great, but definitely has not been overplayed! (The first time I heard it was on the soundtrack of the 1998 movie Velvet Goldmine.) The end of the song — when the drums, synth, guitar and who knows what else go nuts — makes me feel like I could ascend into orbit. Seems like a good “party time” pick!

League 14: don’t keep it clean

“I Put a Spell On You by” Screamin’ Jay Hawkins

Theme: Leftovers, Season 14

This one’s a two-fer of ‘less than 2:59 and still good’ and ‘overplayed but awesome’. Though I don’t know if counts as overplayed, actually… it’s been covered by several more well-known artists, including Nina Simone, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Annie Lennox. Anyway, I first heard it in the movie “Stranger than Paradise” back in the ’80s. According to IMDB, “Director Jim Jarmusch was dismayed to discover all the money he paid for the rights to Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ ‘I Put a Spell on You’ went to the record company, with nothing going to Hawkins himself. When the film earned a profit, Jarmusch took it upon himself to track down Hawkins (who was living in a trailer park, at the time) and give him some money. It was the beginning of a friendship that lasted until Hawkins’ death.”

“Window Paine” by The Smashing Pumpkins

Theme: First Albums (Remind us of how that band USED to sound.)

This first album is my favorite of theirs, and this track is a highlight. The dreamy, psychedelic weirdness interspersed with searing guitar and battering drums has an unpredictability to it that I really enjoy. Everything after this album was less interesting to me — even Siamese Dream, which many consider their best. Not me!

I still find it hard to believe that I saw them play on a triple bill with Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam in Burlington, VT. That was quite a show!

“Awakened One” by Laurie Anderson, Tenzin Choegyal, Jesse Paris Smith 👶

Theme: SPEAK (Any spoken word or poetry, with or without musical accompaniment.)

A collaboration between Tibetan-Australian musician Tenzin Choegyal, Jesse Paris Smith, and Laurie Anderson, this album explores the famous Buddhist text “Bardo Thodol”, commonly known as the Tibetan Book of the Dead.

“Christiansands” by Tricky, Martina Topley-Bird 🥇

Theme: Intimate Encounters

The temptation was strong to put in a joke submission, especially as I can’t remember ever queuing up special music during an “intimate encounter”… but I decided on a more sincere pick. This song has always seemed sexy and mysterious to me, and the blurred smoky rhythms seem like a perfect match for this theme.

“My Vag (Vag Redux Edition)” by Awkwafina

Theme: Dirty Mind (a song with extremely sexually charged lyrics)

Had to go for funny this time.

“Reno Dakota” by The Magnetic Fields

Theme: Under 1:59 and still good!

Reno Dakota, there’s not an iota of kindness in you
You know you enthrall me and yet you don’t call me
It’s making me blue
Pantone 292

(I love The Magnetic Fields’ lyrics.)

“Sans Titre” by Ahmed Malek 👶

Theme: Songs Named “Untitled”

Have some funky Algerian jazz!
