And some of this history isn&#8217;t pretty.<\/p>\n<p>In the streets of Frankfurt, Beverly and I came across these two seals embedded in the cobblestones.<\/p>\n<p>#1, located in the midst of the R\u00f6merplatz<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Book-Burning-Seal.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>The original German reads:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Das war ein Vorspiel nur, dort wo man B\u00fccher verbrennt, verbrennt man am ende auch Menschen.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8212; 1820, H. Heine<\/p>\n<p>An dieser Stelle verbrannten am 10.Mai 1933 Nationalsozialistische Studenten die B\u00fccher von Schriftstellern Wissenschaftlern Publizisten und Philosophen.<\/p>\n<p>My English translation:<br \/>\n&#8220;This was only a prelude, for where they burn books, they will also in the end burn men.&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8212; Heinrich Heine [from &#8220;Almansor&#8221;], 1820<\/p>\n<p>On this spot on May 10, 1933, students of the National Socialist Party burned the books of writers, academics, journalists and philosophers.<\/p>\n<p>#2, closer to the Dom (main cathedral)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"..\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Bombing-Seal.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>The original German reads:<\/p>\n<p>1939 zur Erinnerung 1945<\/p>\n<p>Zwischen dem 4.Juni 1940 und dem 24.M\u00e4rz 1945 wurde Frankfurt von 33 Luftangriffen, zahllosen St\u00f6rfl\u00fcgen und Tieffliegerangriffen heimgesucht. Tausende Tonnen Spreng- und Brandbomben zerst\u00f6rten oder besch\u00e4digten vier F\u00fcnftel aller Bauten. Am 22.M\u00e4rz 1944 l\u00f6schte ein Grossangriff den Altstadkern v\u00f6llig aus. Bei Kriegsende bedeckten 17 Mio. CBM Tr\u00fcmmer die Stadt, die um 14701 Gefallene und 5559 Bombenopfer trauerte.<\/p>\n<p>My English translation:<\/p>\n<p>In Remembrance, 1939-1945<\/p>\n<p>Between June 4, 1940 and March 24, 1945 Frankfurt was ravaged by 33 air raids, countless harrying flights and low flying offensives. Thousands of tons of high-explosive bombs and incendiaries destroyed or damaged four-fifths of the buildings. On March 22, 1944, a massive assault completely wiped out the core of the old city.
